A way to connect seniors with families over great distances — Ollo Mobile — and a smartwatch that syncs with Bluetooth devices are the unique wearable devices pitted against each other in our Sweet Sixteen bracket for wearables.

The OlloMobile is a cloud-based phone that’s designed to help users communicate in emergencies even when there is little or no cellular signal. It will keep calling until it gets a human being. It also has components that allow children to stay in touch over great distances. It’s intended to be worn so it can monitor activity levels with an accelerometer. For example, if the user’s activity were to halt suddenly children could contact their parents to see if they had fallen. They can also view activity in context of things like changes in medication.

One interesting thing about Pebble, which was a crowdfunding success story,  is its Bluetooth connection means it could receive text messages reminders and alerts from the users’ smartphone. It makes it handy for accessing tools such as pill reminders. There’s also potential for apps and alerts for healthcare as monitoring tool and a platform for connectivity  that include basic fitness tracking.

Why? It offer a way to fill a current blindspot in healthcare — to help users communicate in emergencies even when there is little or no cellular signal. It’s intended to be won so  children and caregivers can keep an eye on parents’ activity levels  even thousands of miles away.
