That ice bucket challenge that you can’t seem to ignore even if you wanted to over the past week is now making it’s way to at least one major healthcare provider.

After the likes of Mark Zuckerberberg, Bill Gates, Derek Jeter and scores other celebrities and failed attempts on YouTube, the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center’s ALS Motor Neuron Disease Clinic will host “a medical ice bucket challenge” today at Martha Morehouse Pavilion.

(There’s perhaps others, but Ohio State sent an email, so there’s that).

The clinic expects between 30 and 40 of its researchers to partake in the event, which involves dumping a bucket of ice water over one’s head as part of an awareness campaign to raise money for ALS, or Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, often known as Lou Gerhig’s Disease.

The purpose the effort, started by the ALS Association, initially was to challenge people to either donate $100 to the cause or have ice-cold water dumped on you. Seemingly, people are doing both.

While it may seem silly, to say that it’s been an effective fund-raising effort would be a dramatic understatement. As of yesterday, the ALS Association said it has received $31.5 million in donations since July 29 – compared to $1.9 million during the same period last year. (Reporters aren’t known for their math skills, but even we can calculate that’s, like, way more. Like a billion percent). Donations have come from existing donors and more than 637,000 new donors.
