Apple’s hotly anticipated HealthKit reportedly experienced significant problems just ahead of its rollout today, leaving scores of developers and healthcare companies who plan on using the platform in a temporary lurch.

In a statement, Apple confirmed it ran into issues today but offered little else:

“We discovered a bug that prevents us from making HealthKit apps available on iOS 8 today. We’re working quickly to have the bug fixed in a software update and have HealthKit apps available by the end of the month.”

No further details have been offered on what the bug might be, but several developers took to Twitter and suggested the issues stem from data management.

Several high-profile companies have announced intentions to work within HealthKit, among them WebMD, Stanford and Duke universities and countless startups working on mobile health apps.

WebMD, just ahead of HealthKit’s issues, sent out an announcement exhorting the virtues of the platform, which collects personal data from devices and other mobile products to combine in iO8’s health app.

One California startup, Medable, told MedCity News that it would work with HealthKit, saying:

“It is so exciting that we will have informative biometric data from everyone with an iPhone.”

Other notable apps impacted by the bug include MyFitnessPal and Carrot Fit.
