McKesson hires new CIO/CTO from outside healthcare

McKesson has gone outside the healthcare industry in hiring a new CIO and CTO, naming Kathy McElligott to serve the dual role beginning July 20. McElligott comes to the healthcare supply giant from Emerson Electric, where she has served as CIO since 2010.

“As a respected industry leader, her track record in strategic global technology and driving exceptional customer experience will help McKesson continue to deliver greater value to our customers and shareholders,” McKesson Chairman and CEO John Hammergren said in a press release.

The move possibly signals that the San Francisco-based company is concerned more about IT security in the wake of several high-profile criminal hacks against healthcare organizations. A McKesson spokesperson did not immediately respond to a MedCity News inquiry on Monday.

McElligott joined Emerson in 2000, working her way up from IT director of two different business units to corporate CIO 10 years later. She previously spent 22 years at General Electric, including serving as CIO of supply chain for the industrial conglomerate’s GE Aircraft Engines division, according to McKesson.

While IT is a $3.1 billion business at McKesson — including McKesson Health Solutions, RelayHealth, an imaging division and other segments — it represented just 2 percent of McKesson’s $179.1 billion in revenue for the fiscal year ended March 31.

McElligott will replace Randy Spratt, who is retiring next month.
