Boston Children’s John Brownstein talks healthcare innovation (video)

In the spirit of innovation, we wanted to try something new, namely record a video interview with new Boston Children's Hospital Chief Innovation Officer John Brownstein via a Google Hangout chat.

A month ago, Boston Children’s Hospital named John Brownstein its new chief innovation officer, filling the vacancy left when the well-known Naomi Fried took a job with Biogen last year. In the spirit of innovation, we wanted to try something new, namely record a video interview with Brownstein via a Google Hangout chat.

Brownstein, an epidemiologist by training, actually has been with the Harvard-affiliated pediatric hospital for 11 years, so he certainly knows the ropes. He also has conducted research in digital health and health innovation as director of the Computational Epidemiology Group, covering several Boston healthcare institutions.

Here, Brownstein discusses his experience in healthcare innovation, as well as some projects Boston Children’s is involved in, including the evaluation of Apple’s ResearchKit. Since Brownstein is new in this role, he is taking inventory of the work underway right now, but the innovation continues.

Data interoperability, remote care and patient/parent engagement are key themes.
