American Well, Doximity push telemedicine as MD career option

Two of the biggest names in digital health for healthcare professionals want to make the “online doctor” a viable career path. Physician social network Doximity and telemedicine service provider American Well are teaming up to offer physicians the option of practicing medicine remotely.

American Well, of Boston, has used San Francisco-based Doximity to recruit physicians to its telehealth network for the last two years, according to Joel Davis, Doximity vice president for hiring solutions. “They were one of our earliest telemedicine partners,” he said.

Now, more than half of the board-certified physicians practicing telemedicine on American Well’s Amwell platform got there via Doximity, the companies said. With that in mind, American Well and Doximity decided it was time to formalize their effort to present remote care as an option to doctors looking to extend their practices and offer more options to patients.

“Consumers are shifting to want that kind of service and convenience,” Davis said. American Well surveys have shown that 64 percent of consumers would be willing to see a physician by video and that 57 percent of physicians would participate.

The motivation for physicians, according to Davis, is more than just ancillary income. “I also think that lifestyle is very appealing as well,” he said. “Telemedicine is becoming a career destination.”

American Well’s network mostly consists of primary care physicians, though it also includes dietitians and psychotherapists.
