1. J&J highlights plans for 3D printed orthopedics and contact lenses following alliance with HP

On the heels of its collaboration with HP Inc. focused on 3D printing, Johnson & Johnson officials provided more specifics about its ambitious plans for the manufacturing technique during a meeting with Wall Streeters. The alliance with HP is only one of J&J’s more than 50 strategic collaborations with other companies, government agencies and academics inspired by the technology.

The company revealed that it is developing a trio of 3D printed devices, on top of its 3D printed cutting guide. Most surprising are its plans for a 3D printed, sunlight-enabled personalized contact lens.

2. Healthcare IT startups have become too willing to accept pilot status

Pilots may or may not result in any revenue for the startup and may in fact cost them money to implement. Pilots also cost the customer money and time. The idea behind them is that, by proving efficacy, the potential customer will be compelled to become a permanent one and enter into a long-term agreement to use the company’s wares. But all too often this never happens.

New York City’s Mount Sinai Health System seems to have a communication problem on its hands.

Recent headlines questioned whether or even suggested that the health system would be closing down Mount Sinai Beth Israel Hospital in Lower Manhattan. The hospital is said to be losing hundreds of millions of dollars.

Courtesy of a deal between two of its vendors, Medical University of South Carolina is embedding access to its Vidyo video communication platform into its Epic Systems EHR. “We are just in the launching phase of that now,” said Dr. James McElligot, medical director for telehealth at the Charleston, South Carolina-based med school and health system.
