Telemedicine provider Doctor On Demand, has hired a new CEO with a resume steeped in online payment companies, most notably PayPal, according to a company statement. Hill Ferguson is scheduled to start May 11.
Ferguson takes over the role from Adam Jackson who served as CEO since Doctor on Demand’s launch in 2012. The move comes as the company seeks to boost its competitive edge as telemedicine providers seek to become a more mainstream service.
Ferguson worked for PayPal for four years after eBay, which owns PayPal, acquired the mobile payments service Zong, where he was vice president of product and marketing.

Doctor on Demand, founded by Jackson, TV talk show host “Dr Phil” McGraw and his son, Jay McGraw, has been ramping up its direct to consumer telemedicine business but it has also been courting corporate customers such as drugstore chains, which are seeking to boost their own profiles as healthcare providers. Last year, it raised $50 million to build its customer base among retail pharmacies and employers. At the time, Jackson said it planned to use some of the funding to build up its technology, operations and marketing staff ranks.
Jackson and the company’s board decided earlier this year that Doctor on Demand needed a leader that could serve the two different sets of customers, particularly to expand its enterprise customer base. The company claims it bagged its 400th corporate customer earlier this year.
