Epic and M*Modal team up to use AI for EHR workflow

Longtime partners Epic and M*Modal are joining forces to use M*Modal's machine learning solutions to improve EHR workflow.

Franklin, Tennessee-based M*Modal has enhanced its artificial intelligence solutions to support Verona, Wisconsin-based Epic’s NoteReader Clinical Documentation Improvement tool.

NoteReader CDI utilizes the M*Modal Computer-Assisted Physician Documentation technology.

M*Modal’s CAPD technology analyzes each documentation and clinical note. It then uses machine learning to offer physicians insights and give quality and compliance improvement suggestions.

Through this collaboration, M*Modal’s CAPD technology is embedded in the Epic system.

“Physicians would now have the flexibility to utilize our CAPD proactively before it is saved in the EHR using M*Modal Fluency Direct speech recognition or after it is saved by using the Epic NoteReader CDI workflow,” Brauser said.

By joining forces on this initiative, M*Modal and Epic want to bring value to physicians and patients.

“For physicians, it’s an easy way of getting the right, contextually and clinically significant insights at the start of the EHR documentation workflow — truly seamless and real time,” Aaron Brauser, M*Modal’s vice president of solutions management, said via email. “But most importantly, by unifying clinical documentation creation in the EHR with CDI in a singular workflow, this technology ultimately enables physicians to spend more time delivering patient care and less time getting the documentation right.”

From a patient standpoint, Brauser noted that the CAPD technology can proactively pinpoint specific patient needs. For example, it can give physicians feedback on patients with critical conditions and can identify patients in need of follow-up care.

This isn’t the first time Epic and M*Modal have collaborated.

“M*Modal’s longstanding collaboration with Epic is focused on optimizing the user experience of joint clients to improve the physician documentation experience, while simultaneously enhancing the quality of clinical documentation and patient care,” Brauser said.

Currently, more than 65 healthcare facilities that use Epic’s EHR system also utilize M*Modal’s technology.

M*Model’s CAPD technology not only offers providers real-time feedback, but also has silent mode analytics. In other words, the technology collects data quietly in the background and does not overly disturb physicians. Brauser also noted that M*Model’s CAPD provides more than 3,000 best practices to boost the value of the clinical note.

“That is why we are extremely excited about this collaboration that further enhances our ability to execute CAPD within the Epic workflow without disrupting the physician’s preferred documentation practices,” he said.
