Meet the startup helping doctors find office space

Clineeds, a self-funded startup based in Chicago, is helping healthcare professionals, brokers and organizations locate, lease and sell healthcare office space throughout the U.S.

Are you a dentist, therapist or chiropractor looking to find part-time office space? Or a healthcare realtor attempting to sell unused offices? Clineeds can lend a hand.

The Chicago, Illinois-based startup initially launched in 2015, but altered its model and relaunched in July 2016. Today, everyone from healthcare professionals to commercial brokers to healthcare organizations can locate, lease and sell healthcare office space and practices using Clineeds’ platform.

The impetus behind Clineeds came after Rishi Garg, a neurologist, and Sumul Gandhi, a dermatologist, completed their fellowships. Though they were both interested in private practice, they found many realtors didn’t have the type of office space they were seeking.

“There really is no centralized database,” Garg said in a recent phone interview. “That was where this whole idea came about. We needed to create this for healthcare professionals.”

And that’s exactly what they did.

Currently, there are more than 6,000 healthcare professionals and brokers using Clineeds’ website. Physicians, nutritionists, hospitals and ambulatory surgery centers can find lab space, treatment rooms and more via the platform. Clineeds is also home to medical, physical therapy and veterinary practices for sale, as well as numerous healthcare job listings.

While users can find space across the United States, Garg noted that most of Clineeds’ listings are concentrated in New York City and California.

Unlike sites such as Craigslist, the startup oversees quality control of its site, Garg said. “We’ll correct the spelling mistakes. We’ll reformat the pictures,” he said.

To utilize the Clineeds platform, individuals create a free account and begin their search or post a listing, which is also free to do. But if everything’s free, how is Clineeds making money?

It profits from users interested in premium listings on its site. Much like Google AdWords, those who pay a fee get the top spot in the search results.

Although Clineeds has been in operation for about two years, it remains self-funded.

“I haven’t taken a penny of VC or angel money,” Garg said. And he intends to keep it that way — at least until the startup has found the right investor.

“They’re going to have skin in the game,” he added. “In order for us to give up that equity, we want to make sure we find the right partner to grow with.”

Moving forward, Clineeds will continue to leverage its uniqueness as it faces competitors like LoopNet, a commercial real estate service, and Realtor.com.

“We only focus on healthcare,” Garg said. “That’s how we distinguish ourselves from competitors.”

And while the startup is currently focused on ensuring its traffic is growing, eventually Garg hopes to get into the business of buying and selling medical equipment.
