CLEVLEAND, Ohio — Health care insurer Medical Mutual of Ohio has hired its longtime legal counselor, Patrick J. Dugan, as chief legal officer and executive vice president.
As a partner in the Columbus office of Squire, Sanders & Dempsey, Dugan has been lead outside counsel for Medical Mutual’s inside attorneys and directors since 1997.
In his new position, Dugan will be responsible for managing Medical Mutual’s internal legal staff and coordinating legal activities with outside counsel, the insurer said in a written statement.

Among several distinctions, Dugan was listed in the 2006, 2007 and 2008 editions of The Best Lawyers in America under the banking law, corporate law, and mergers & acquisitions law categories, according to Squire, Sanders’ Web site.
A native of Lima, Ohio, Dugan is an honors graduate of Ohio State University’s College of Law, Medical Mutual said. He earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Bowling Green State University, also in Ohio.
Medical Mutual, which calls itself the oldest and largest health insurer based in Ohio, named Rick Chiricosta as president and chief executive on Feb. 1, filling the vacancy created by the untimely death of Kent Clapp in a December plane crash.
Earlier this month, J.D. Powers and Associates gave Medical Mutual the highest ranking for customer satisfaction (pdf) among major health insurers in Ohio.
