Lake Health hospitals get Society of Chest Pain Centers accreditation

LakeWest Medical Center, LakeEast Medical Center, and the soon-to-be-opened TriPoint Medical Center of Lake Health System have received accreditation from the Society of Chest Pain Centers. Since January, Lake Health has improved processes to dramatically reduce the time in which heart attack patients are diagnosed and treated.

PAINESVILLE, Ohio — LakeWest Medical Center, LakeEast Medical Center, and the soon-to-be-opened TriPoint Medical Center of Lake Health System have received accreditation from the Society of Chest Pain Centers.

The accreditation, which is valid through Sept. 14, 2012, means the health system provides optimum treatment for patients with chest pain.

“We’re committed to providing our patients the most compassionate, high quality cardiac care possible,” said Cynthia Moore-Hardy,  president and chief executive officer of Lake Health, in a written statement. “Accreditation from the Society of Chest Pain Centers acknowledges that our approach to patient management is recognized by a leading accrediting organization as a best practices protocol.”

Heart attacks are the leading cause of death in the United States, killing 600,000 people a year, Lake Health said. More than five million Americans visit hospitals each year for chest pain. The goal of the Society of Chest Pain Centers is to significantly reduce the mortality rate of these patients by teaching the public to recognize and react to the early symptoms of a heart attack, reducing the time that it takes to receive treatment, and increasing the accuracy and effectiveness of treatment.

As part of a system-wide initiative, Lake Health has improved processes to dramatically reduce the time in which heart attack patients are diagnosed and treated. Since January 2009, the health system has achieved door-to-balloon times of 90 minutes or less, which the American College of Cardiology and the American Heart Association have established as the gold standard for quality of care, Lake Health said. “Door-to-balloon time” is a measure of quality that starts when a patient enters the door and ends with a balloon angioplasty — a procedure that reopens closed heart arteries that often cause heart attacks.

For the last three years, Lake Health also has been named among the top 5 percent of hospitals in the nation for cardiac services and surgery by HealthGrades, the independent hospital ratings provider, Moore-Hardy said.
