Fairview Hospital President Janice Murphy named to additional presidency at Lakewood Hospital

Fairview Hospital President Janice Murphy has been named to the additional post of president of Lakewood Hospital, effective Jan. 1. Both hospitals are owned by the Cleveland Clinic. Murphy will replace current Lakewood Hospital President Jack Gustin, who will support the West Side and Lorain County initiatives of Cleveland Clinic Regional Hospitals.

LAKEWOOD, Ohio — Fairview Hospital President Janice Murphy has been named to the additional post of president of Lakewood Hospital, effective Jan. 1. Both hospitals are owned by the Cleveland Clinic and located within a handful of miles from each other on the West Side of Cleveland.

Murphy, who is a registered nurse, has led Fairview Hospital since 2007, according to a press release. In her dual role, she will oversee operations of Lakewood and Fairview hospitals. Previously, Murphy was senior vice president and chief operating officer for Fairview Hospital.

“Jan is an exceptional leader who possesses an extensive knowledge of this market and our hospital system and is an advocate for patients,” said Dr. Fred DeGrandis, president and chief executive officer of Cleveland Clinic Regional Hospitals, in the release. “She is an advocate for physicians and employees, and brings a talent that will most effectively continue to advance the goals of the Cleveland Clinic health system for the benefit of our patients.”

Murphy is charged with making the most of efficiencies and opportunities between the two West Side hospitals, the Clinic said. The dual-management structure will help patients and hospital communities by ensuring high-level care while positioning both hospitals for long-term stability.

“This is a great opportunity for our organizations to really work together in overlapping markets to build on the strengths each hospital offers and continue to keep our patients at the forefront of every decision,” Murphy said. “I’m excited to be a part of this and believe it will allow us to build on a combined nearly 200 years of care both hospitals have provided to our communities and challenge us to consider new opportunities and continue exciting existing ventures.”

As part of the management change, the financial operations of Lakewood and Fairview hospitals will be led by a yet-to-be-named finance director. Jack Gustin, who has been president of Lakewood Hospital since 2004, will support the West Side and Lorain County initiatives of Cleveland Clinic Regional Hospitals in an unspecified role, the Clinic said.
