CLEVELAND, Ohio — The Cleveland Clinic has named Dr. Edmund Sabanegh Jr. as chairman of the Department of Urology in its Glickman Urological & Kidney Institute.
Sabanegh joined the Clinic in 2006 as director of the Center for Male Fertility. He also is program director for the Male Infertility Fellowship, which is one of the few male infertility fellowship programs in the United States that combines basic research with extensive clinical experience, the Clinic said in a statement.
“Ed brings a tremendous amount of experience to the Department of Urology and will provide strong leadership as we expand our research efforts and work to provide the best outcomes for patients,” Dr. Eric A. Klein, chairman of the Glickman Institute, said in the statement.

Sabanegh is an associate editor of Urology and a reviewer for several urologic journals. His surgical interests include microsurgical reconstruction of the male reproductive tract and advanced sperm harvest techniques. His research interests include complex reconstructions for obstruction of the reproductive tract, fertility preservation in cancer patients and environmental influences on fertility.
He served in the Air Force where he held roles including urology department chairman, chief of the medical staff and chief operating officer of the Air Force’s largest medical center. He also was urology consultant to the Air Force surgeon general.
Sabanegh received his undergraduate training in chemical engineering at Princeton University and his medical degree from the University of Virginia College of Medicine. He did his urology residency at Wilford Hall Air Force Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas.
“We have before us the challenge to take urologic care to the next level with innovation and compassion,” Sabanegh said in the Clinic’s statement. “I’m honored by this opportunity to lead a world-renowned staff that’s so dedicated to providing exceptional care for patients.”
The Hidden Administrative Tasks Draining Small Practices
Small practices play a critical role in healthcare delivery, but they cannot continue to absorb ever-increasing administrative demands without consequences.
Sabanegh replaces Dr. Inderbir Gill, who left almost a year ago to become chairman of the Department of Urology in the Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California.
