Night Read (Ohio): MedWish collect supplies; doctors, nurses volunteer for Haiti

MedWish International still is collecting medical supplies for victims of the Haitian earthquake while Ohio doctors, nurses and other medical professionals volunteer to help.

MedWish International volunteers are still hard at work preparing supplies to send to Haiti, according to WKYC-TV.

Mentor plastic surgeon  Dr. Paul Vanek, nurses Teresa Jackson and Jean Kurdas, and anesthesiologist Dr. Jack Fitzgerald — and about 50 pounds of tools and supplies — began a trek this morning to Haiti to help earthquake survivors, according to the Willoughby News-Herald

Jason McMullan, an emergency medicine doctor at UC Health University Hospital in Cincinnati,  expects to ship out Wednesday or Thursday with an 80-member Federal Emergency Management Agency urban search and rescue team that includes four other doctors, paramedics, firefighters, structural engineers, dog handlers and search dogs, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer.

Bertie LaCorte, a 73-year-old retired nurse and mission volunteer from Granville, is one of many survivors of the Haiti earthquake who recently arrived home with tales of trauma, according to the Columbus Dispatch.

Ohio’s bioscience industry has grown substantially over the years and now is home to at least 1,141 bioscience organizations, an increase of almost 40 percent from 2007, according to a blog post by TechLife Columbus.
