Police Chief Frank Bova said the department is investigating an incident where a man shot himself outside the emergency room at South Pointe Hospital, a Cleveland Clinic hospital, about 9:30 a.m. Friday.

Police say Michael Allen, 41, of Shaker Heights, arrived at the hospital where he announced he wanted to kill himself.

Hospital security officers stepped in and tried to talk to him, Bova said. Then Allen went outside, sat on a guardrail, and pulled a gun from his waistband.

Hospital security officers immediately called the Warrensville Heights police. Then Allen pulled the trigger and shot himself in the chest.

The hospital staff immediately began working on him, Bova said.

Allen was taken by LifeFlight to MetroHealth Medical Center where he was reported to be in critical condition as of Friday night.
