The Northeastern Ohio Universities Colleges of Medicine and Pharmacy (NEOUCOM) has added a Master of Public Health degree, thanks to an accreditation extension by the Higher Learning Commission.

The commission also approved the Rootstown, Ohio university for new Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degrees in integrated pharmaceutical medicine, according to a NEOUCOM release.

“These degrees add to our existing M.D. and Pharm.D. offerings and underscore NEOUCOM’s transformation as one of 14 public universities within the University System of Ohio,” said Jay A. Gershen, the Rootstown university’s president, in the release.

“The process to achieve this milestone began under the leadership of former president, Dr. Lois Margaret Nora, and has involved many individuals at NEOUCOM,” said Gershen, who was hired as NEOUCOM president in October.

In May, Kent State University, a member of the NEOUCOM consortium, said it would begin offering a master’s degree in public health this fall. The master’s degree marks the third program available at Kent State’s new College of Public Health. Last year, the university opened enrollment for bachelor’s and certificate programs in public health.

The new degree programs are aiming to fill expected vacancies in the public health sector, from frontline workers in labs testing for diseases such as H1N1 to public health policymakers to food inspectors. The Association of Schools of Public Health in 2008 predicted the United States would need an additional 250,000 health educators, epidemiologists and others in the public health arena by 2020.
