BioOhio Annual Conference to visit three Ohio cities

This fall, BioOhio will hold its Annual Conference in three regions on three different dates. “Innovation Road Show” will visit northeast Ohio on September 28, central Ohio on October 28, and southwest Ohio on November 17. At all three sites, the emphasis will be on biomedical innovation — defining it, discussing it, debating it, and understanding how essential it is from R&D through commercialization to market. Ample networking time will be available for Ohio’s bioscience innovators to share ideas and initiate collaborations.

This fall, BioOhio will hold its Annual Conference in three regions on three different dates. “Innovation Road Show” will visit Northeast Ohio on Sept. 28, central Ohio on Oct. 28, and Southwest Ohio on Nov. 17.

“We think this regional-one-year, central-the-next approach will allow us to extend the value of the annual conference and allow more ‘first timers’ to experience the event and learn more about Ohio’s growing bioscience industry,” said BioOhio’s Matt Schutte. Each event will kick off around 10, include a great lunch, wrap up around 4:30, and then close the day out with a networking reception.

At all three sites, the emphasis will be on biomedical innovation — defining it, discussing it, debating it, and understanding how essential it is from R&D through commercialization to market. Ample networking time will be available for Ohio’s bioscience innovators to share ideas and initiate collaborations.

BioOhio has secured keynote speakers with volumes to share on the featured topic. “We are extremely fortunate to have such inspiring keynote speakers at this year’s events,” said Schutte. “These are individuals that combine vision and expertise to drive innovation everywhere they’ve been.” The Sept. 28 event at the Embassy Suites Cleveland-Rockside features Austen BioInnovation Institute in Akron’s President & CEO Frank Douglas, PhD, MD, and Philips Healthcare Senior Vice President Jay Mazelsky.

An award-winning industry veteran with more than 24 years of experience as a leader in healthcare, pharmaceutical research, and entrepreneurship, Dr. Douglas serves as day-to-day chief strategist for the Austen BioInnovation Institute, a new biomaterials institute built on a unique collaboration of five leading medical and educational institutions. Dr. Douglas was formerly executive vice president, chief scientific officer, and a member of the board of management of Aventis, where he headed drug innovation and approval, with global responsibilities for research, development, and regulatory and marketing support.

Mazelsky is leading development of the Global Advanced Imaging Innovation Center to be based at University Hospitals Case Medical Center in Cleveland, in which Philips has invested $33.4 million. The collaboration will provide strategic research, development and clinical validation for advanced imaging technologies and will further develop Philips’ presence in northeast Ohio. After his presentation, Mazelsky and other imaging experts will take part in a panel discussion on the future of medical imaging.

Each location’s agenda also will include a panel discussion on the Council for American Medical Innovation’s “Gone Tomorrow?” report as well as a session called Innovation Open Mic, which will feature up to 10 BioOhio members sharing insight on how they facilitate and exploit innovation everyday.

Cleveland’s “Gone Tomorrow?” Panel includes: Warren Goldenberg of Hahn Loeser & Parks and Fluence Therapeutics, Joe Jankowski  of Case Western Reserve University, Brian Duncan of BioEnterprise and Arboretum Ventures, and Kristin Yakimow of USB/Affymetrix.

The keynote speaker on Oct. 28 in Dublin is Christine Poon, Dean of Ohio State University’s Fisher College of Business. Poon joined OSU after a 30-year career in the healthcare industry, most recently as vice chairman and member of the board of Johnson & Johnson and worldwide chair of the Pharmaceuticals Group.

Cincinnati native Dr. Thomas Fogarty will be the keynote speaker on Nov. 17 in Mason. Dr. Fogarty is an internationally recognized cardiovascular surgeon and inventor. He owns over 100 medical patents, including the revolutionary Fogarty Balloon Embolectomy Catheter and the widely used Aneurx Stent Graft.
