The Cleveland Clinic is losing the top man at the Taussig Cancer Institute to North Carolina. Dr. Derek Raghavan, chairman of the Taussig Cancer Institute, is taking a new position with Carolinas HealthCare System in Charlotte.

Dr. Raghavan leaves after a seven-year tenure. He is an internationally recognized authority on cancer and is extensively published on the topic.

He will serve as president of the newly created Levine Cancer Institute and Network in Charlotte beginning in April 2011, and will preside over construction of a new cancer hospital. The Carolinas HealthCare System will invest $500 million in the project over ten years.

“I have really enjoyed my time in Cleveland,” said Dr. Raghavan. “The staff at the Taussig Cancer Institute and all our interlinked cancer facilities are an amazing crew, who put patients first and want to cure cancer. I was welcomed into the Cleveland community from day one, and have really benefitted from many friendships, and help and support from our outstanding Taussig Leadership Board. I’m looking forward to my tasks and challenges ahead, but I will never forget the warmth and worth of the community in Cleveland.”
