Direct-pay doctor planning a startup? InnovaDoc aims to raise $1.8M

Stealth-mode startup InnovDoc is raising $1.8 million for a company that will be healthcare related. It looks as if InnovaDoc could be modeled on the payment practices of Dr. Brian Forrest, who only accepts direct payments from patients and accepts nothing from insurance companies.

InnovaDoc, a North Carolina healthcare-related company that has yet to officially launch, is in the midst of a targeted $1.8 million round of fund-raising, according to securities filings.

The Apex, North Carolina company has raised $600,000 so far with the first sale occurring on Jan. 19. William J. Lawson, Jr., listed as an executive for the company, said that while InnovaDoc is not a healthcare company, it will be healthcare related. He said InnovaDoc is prelaunch so he is not at liberty to go into any further details about its business.

But it looks like the InnovaDoc could be modeled on the payment practices of Dr. Brian Forrest, a family practitioner in Apex. Forrest is also listed on the SEC filing as an InnovaDoc executive and director. According to records with the North Carolina Secretary of State, Forrest is the registered agent for InnovaDoc, which was formed in June of last year.

Forrest’s practice is unique in that it takes only direct payments from patients and accepts nothing from insurance companies. Forrest has said that by dealing only with patients directly, he saves on overhead and is able to charge less. With healthcare costs top of mind for many people, it will be interesting to see what InnovaDoc looks to bring to the table.
