The University of Cincinnati College of Medicine has appointed Dr. Thomas Boat as its new dean, effective July 1.

Boat has worked at the University of Cincinnati’s (UC) medical school since 1993, when he joined as chairman of pediatrics. Prior to his appointment as dean, he held the title of executive associate dean, a position he’d been in since 2008, according to a statement from UC.

“After a thorough national search for the right candidate to fill this important position, it is clear that the best person for the job is right here at home,” UC President Gregory H. Williams said in the statement.

Boat becomes the 49th dean in the medical college’s nearly 200-year history. The college was founded in 1819 and is the second-oldest public medical school in the country.

Before he joined UC, Boat was chairman of the department of pediatrics at the University of North Carolina. Prior to that, he was co-director of the Cystic Fibrosis Center at Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital in Cleveland.
