Oasis Consumer Healthcare has launched an over-the-counter mouthwash aimed at people over the age of 50.

The new product, called Oasis Age Essential, is a daily use, alcohol-free mouthwash “specifically designed for the oral health needs of Baby Boomers and older Americans,” according to a statement from the Cleveland-based company.

Age Essential kills germs for 16 hours while it moistens a dry mouth, freshens breath and helps prevent plaque and gingivitis, the company said.

Seniors are more prone to weaker saliva, mouth dryness, gingivitis and plaque compared with their younger counterparts, according to the company.

A 16-ounce bottle of the new product comes with a suggested retail price of $6.99.

Oasis is said to be backed by an investor group that includes prominent members of the Northeast Ohio medical community, though the only one the company has publicly identified is Mahmoud Ghannoum, director of the Center for Medical Mycology at University Hospitals Case Medical Center. Ghannoum’s son, Afif, a Cleveland attorney, is a principal with the company.

The company formed last year when it bought the rights to its first product, also called Oasis, from Cleveland-based Gebauer Company. The plan was to use that product, also a mouthwash, as a “platform technology” to spin off similar products. Age Essential is the first test of that hypothesis.
