Mayo Clinic is hosting a conference on systems engineering and operations research in health care beginning Aug. 10, 2011. Health care professionals, operations research practitioners and academic faculty will discuss the effective application of systems engineering (SE) and operations research tools (OR) as transformers of health care delivery, clinical operations, research and education.

The three-day conference will include a series of interactive tutorials, general sessions and three concurrent sessions with 18 options for conference participants. Poster presentations and Exhibitor booths will be available as well.

Albert Mulley, M.D., from Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center will deliver the opening address. The closing address will be a multidisciplinary presentation involving a patient story and facilitated by Michael Rock, M.D., Mayo Clinic orthopedic surgeon, and William Pierskalla, Ph.D., Professor Emeritus, UCLA.

The invited faculty includes:

  • Carl Clark, M.D., CEO of Mental Health Center of Denver. Dr. Clark is an award-winning, nationally recognized leader in mental health care. He believes that people with mental illness can recover and has dedicated his career to delivering quality care to these patients.
  • David C. Lane, Ph.D., A leader in Management Science at the London School of Economics. Dr. Lane specializes in applying system dynamics modeling to policy issues in several areas including health care. He is currently president of the System Dynamics Society.
  • John Noseworthy, M.D., President and CEO of Mayo Clinic and Professor of Neurology. Before assuming his current position, Dr. Noseworthy led the “Mayo Clinic in the Year 2020” taskforce that established a long-term direction for the institution. He also served as chair of the Department of Neurology from 1997 to 2006.
  • William P. Pierskalla, Ph.D., Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Decisions, Operations and Technology Management in the Anderson Graduate School of Management at UCLA. He was a pioneer in the application of operations research to health care and is co-editor of Operations Research and Health Care: A Handbook of Methods and Applications.
