A Michigan health IT company has secured a five year, $8.9 million contract with Pennsylvania’s eHealth Partnership Authority. Its mission? Connect the state’s 11 regional and statewide health information exchanges and four health information service providers so they can share patient data with each other. That’s right. Eleven.
Truven Health Analytics will set up a community shared service platform that will include a suite of registries, indexing services and security functions, according to a company statement. Most importantly, it will help the exchanges share patient histories without sending faxes and demonstrate interoperability to satisfy federal requirements.
The state’s eHealth authority said it would also hire a health IT company to test the platform to verify that it works and assess its effectiveness.

Truven also has contracts with statewide health information networks in Alabama and in West Virginia, which went live in August. Truven’s platform is powered by CareEvolution.
Pennsylvania’s move follows the state’s allocation of $6 million in grants last year to spur regional and statewide exchange of electronic health information between providers and exchanges. The funds were split among health information exchanges and hospitals. Philadelphia-based HealthShare of Southeastern Pennsylavnia; Highmark HIE in Pittsburgh; Lehigh Valley Hospital in Allentown and St. Luke’s Hospital in Bethlehem were among the recipients.
