Galvanic, an Irish company, has married gaming with a Kickstarter campaign to score more than $100,000 for the PIP, a biosensor that measures fluctuating stress levels. The PIP is held between the fingertips and uses the gathered electrodermal activity measurements to chart stress and then sends the info via Bluetooth to an iOS or Android device. The biofeedback is then put to the test as the user plays games on her tablet or phone, doing better if she is relaxed–for instance, a racing game wherein the user goes faster if she relaxes more quickly than her opponent.

The goal of $100,000 was met on the final day of the campaign.

“There is still about 15 hours to go (not that we were cutting it close or anything),” the Galvanic team wrote in an update to the site, celebrating its success at reaching the goal. The Kickstarter campaign began on June 17, and Galvanic reached its halfway point for funding on July 10.

At the time of this post, there were 540 backers and $102,425 raised with about 11 hours left for the project to gain support. This means more than 50 percent of funding occurred in a little more than one week. In order to entice potential backers, as is custom on Kickstarter, the company promised PIPs to contributors at certain donation levels.

Storing and sharing the biofeedback is key to the aim of the product–teaching people to manage their own stress, as well as its marketing.

“From day one, all the games are going to include the ability to record your activity as well as monitor and chart your performance over time,” the company said in a Kickstarter update. “You’ll also be able to export your performance data and share key performance indicators with your social networks.”
