Halloween inspires all kinds of disturbing behaviors that should be worrying Americans, and a sexy John Oliver costume is up there on the list (it really exists). But number one on that list is sugar consumption. We’ve really gone overboard, guys.
Americans spent about 2.2 billion dollars on Halloween candy this year. That seems reasonable, right? But just because consumption goes up during the holiday, it doesn’t mean sugar intake isn’t out of control year-round. As Oliver points out on his HBO show Last Week Tonight (actually from last week), on average, each person in the country consumes about 75 pounds of sugar a year, which is “like eating Michael Cera’s weight in sugar.”
