Surgeon General Vivek Murthy took to “CBS This Morning” Wednesday to state the safety of measles vaccines and touch on medical marijuana research.

Of course, he believes vaccines are safe, and he goes into some details about how the current measles situation is playing out and what the numbers really look like.

He hasn’t always been this open to the idea of marijuana use, but he seems to be coming around to the idea.

“We have some preliminary data showing that for certain medical conditions and symptoms that marijuana can be helpful,” Murthy said. “So I think we have to use that data to drive policymaking, and I’m very interested to see where that data takes us.”

This is a different angle on his thoughts on the marijuana since his Senate confirmation hearing a year ago when he said, “Just like other drugs, I don’t recommend marijuana, and I don’t think it’s a good habit to use marijuana. If I had kids, I would tell them not to use it.”

Murthy’s remarks, focused more on the medical use now, will likely be used as fuel for advocates to push for more research.
