The Department of Veterans Affairs has had a lot of success with its Blue Button interface, a simple, one-click method for patients to download copies of their own health records. Somehow, though, this kind of patient engagement and empowerment has not occurred in the private sector.
Former VA CTO Peter Levin, who led development of Blue Button, spoke on a panel Wednesday at Health Datapalooza in Washington. Afterwards, we caught up with him to discuss why patient engagement and interoperability of health information have been so difficult outside of the closed VA system.
Levin co-founded and now serves as CEO of Washington-based Amida Technology Solutions, a startup that builds Blue Button apps and other health data aggregation tools.
