It’s a name with juice, and perhaps more than a little hint of Apple.
When electronic health records market leader Epic Systems launches its long-awaited app store in the next month or two, the previously reported App Exchange name will be nowhere to be found. Instead, get ready to meet the Epic App Orchard.
Monday at the American Medical Informatics Associaton’s annual symposium in San Francisco, Epic interoperability director Peter DeVault said that the Verona, Wisconsin-based vendor has actually obtained a trademark on the App Orchard name. DeVault subsequently told MedCity News that the app store should be online late this year or early in 2016.

Epic will screen all apps submitted to App Orchard before making them available to its customers. “We will have a review process like Apple has a review process and Google should,” DeVault said.
It’s clear Epic is paying homage to Apple with the name. We’ll find out soon if the effort bears fruit.
