Reality TV that isn’t your average guilty pleasure: ‘Shock Trauma: Edge of Life’

The University of Maryland has a compelling approach to reality TV with ‘Shock Trauma: Edge of Life.’

The University of Maryland has developed a compelling approach to reality TV, a more meaningful take on the widespread genre with Shock Trauma: Edge of Life.

The Discovery Life’s series follows a team of medical professionals at R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center, University of Maryland. According to a release, the show will feature UM School of Medicine faculty physicians and trauma surgeons, alongside University of Maryland Medical Center residents, fellows, nurses, patient care technicians, and an array of specialists, performing lifesaving medical care in the first and highest volume trauma center of its kind in the U.S.

“No one gets up in the morning expecting to end up as a patient at Shock Trauma,” said Scalea. “Our team is committed to giving every person a second chance. The incredible stories of survival and recovery that happen here every day are not possible without the collaboration of partners who together make up Maryland’s safety net for our most critically injured and ill patients.”

The series will premiere January 1 at 10 p.m. Eastern and will air on subsequent Fridays in January and the first week of February. The show features moments when healthcare professionals are faced with extremely challenging situations, including patients who have had unfortunate encounters like car crashes, gun shot wounds, stabbings and brain trauma.
