Indiana, Ohio HIEs start bidirectional exchange

The Indiana Health Information Exchange has begun bidirectional data exchange with Health Bridge, an HIE based in neighboring Ohio, starting with Reid Health, which straddles the state line.

hie_snowflakeMedCity News has partnered with BioCrossroads to provide coverage focused on Indiana’s next generation of growth and innovation in life sciences.

As the Carequality collaborative rolls out its framework to connect health information networks, two long-established health information exchanges are linking their own networks across state lines.

The Indiana Health Information Exchange has begun bidirectional data exchange with Health Bridge, an HIE based in neighboring Ohio. The two HIEs are starting with Reid Health, which straddles the Indiana-Ohio line.

“No other region in this country can provide the depth of data exchange and the two-way flow of information that we have accomplished here,” said Craig Brammer, CEO of Health Bridge parent organization The Health Collaborative. “This collaboration provides a real-world example of a bold vision for connecting healthcare not just in this region, but across the nation.”

IHIE actually has delivered clinical results to Health Bridge since 2009 for patients in the greater Cincinnati area — encompassing parts of Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana — who seek care from Indiana providers. The partnership with Richmond, Indiana-based Reid Health means that Health Bridge has begun sending data to Reid-affiliate physicians who have patients receiving care in Ohio.

The records, including test results, clinical reports and patient summaries automatically populate the outpatient NextGen Healthcare Information Systems electronic medical record at Reid Health sites in both states. “Our partnership with IHIE and The Health Collaborative has seamlessly integrated the data so that it is immediately available and highly usable to our physicians,” Reid Health President and CEO Craig Kinyon said in a statement.
