Extension Healthcare gets exclusive AirStrip One distribution rights

The two companies also announced that they have integrated the Extension Engage Mobile platform and AirStrip One, both of which have FDA 510(k) clearance. This allows clinicians to view patient waveform streams on mobile devices in near-real time, enabling them to respond quickly to critical alarms.

MedCity News has partnered with BioCrossroads to provide coverage focused on Indiana’s next generation of growth and innovation in life sciences.

Extension Healthcare, a Fort Wayne, Indiana-based maker of a communications platform for workflow and care coordination, has become exclusive U.S. distributor of AirStrip One, the interoperability system from mobile healthcare company AirStrip.

The two companies also announced that they have integrated the Extension Engage Mobile platform and AirStrip One, both of which have FDA 510(k) clearance. This allows clinicians to view patient waveform streams on mobile devices in near-real time, enabling them to respond quickly to critical alarms.

“Engage’s innovative communications approach supports the AirStrip vision of making transformational improvements in patient care by keeping caregivers connected,” said Dr. Matt Patterson, president of San Antonio-based AirStrip.

According to Extension CNO Mary Jarnsdorfer, the integrated product gives a more complete picture of each patient’s condition than other mobile platforms. “First-generation systems use small ‘waveform’ images or ‘snippets’ to give clinicians more insight to patient conditions,” Jahrsdoerfer said in a joint Extension-AirStrip press release.

“In the past, a ‘snippet’ was acceptable. However, today physicians and ancillary staff need more than a simple snippet; they need the time period of the alarm event and the ability to scroll to display a continuous, live waveform,” she added.

“In our busy and large unit, front-line staff needs real-time data on patients, even while away from the bedside,” Dr. Colleen Driscoll, a neonatal intensivist at the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore, said. “The Engage-AirStrip solution will enable our staff to view live waveforms to allow for rapid responses when needed.”

The two companies will be demonstrating their integrated platform at next week’s Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society conference in Las Vegas.
