Medronic is pulling a battery pack used in patient monitors because of a manufacturing defect.

Apparently, the battery packs, used in its Coviden Oridon Capnostream 20 and Capnostream 20p, could cause “thermal damage.” The devices are used to check respiratory status and keep tabs on breathing regularity.

Medtronic reportedly got 7 reports of a defects out of the 9,817 battery packs being used. The issues involved smoke inhalation and minor burns.

The company sent out a rework kit to those using the packs, which included instructions on how to remove and dispose the batteries. The packs are made by a third-party contract manufacturer, and Medtronic believes that the manufacturer is responsible for the issue.

Medtronic has contacted the FDA and other regulatory bodies to share information related to this issue, the company said. It will continue working directly with government authorities and customers on this voluntary recall.
