Genospace, a startup which makes a software platform to support precision medicine, has released a mobile app to help healthcare providers match patients to clinical trials in real time.

Genospace Trial Match is an Apple iOS app that scans data from electronic health records, laboratory test results and molecular profiling to identify potential trial participants at the point of care. The app goes on the phones of clinicians.

“Docs get timely notifications when there’s a match,” CEO Mick Correll explained.

There also is a Web app for clinical trial coordinators so coordinators can view all applicable trials and potential matches at any time, according to Correll.

“What we’ve launched here is very much of a framework,” Correll said. It’s very much an enterprise deployment.”

Cambridge, Massachusetts-based Genospace actually launched the app a month ago, rather quietly, with a tweet and a video. Outreach to the media didn’t happen until Tuesday.

The launch customer for Genospace Trial Match will focus on oncology, which is one field of medicine that is increasingly dependent on genomics. “That’s a pretty natural place to start,” Correll said. He would not name the initial user yet, but promised to identify that organization in a few weeks.

Anneka Bjorkeson, a visual designer for Genospace, offered more details and images on her personal blog:

In the main feed, [clinicians] get a quick overview of the “match quality” represented in 5 colored circles. They can also see the trial name, current trial phase, trial arms, open slots remaining and when the match came into their feed.

Once the doctor clicks on a match, they are brought to a detailed view. They can read in depth about their patient and about the clinical trial in which they’ve been matched. The trial information will not only include basic summaries and logistics, but also show specifically which inclusion criteria the patient has matched, helping the doctor to determine whether to refer the patient for that trial.

The app is for Apple iOS only right now. “That’s certainly the dominant platform for doctors today,” Correll said. Genospace will develop an Android version later if there is demand.
