Dr. Brian Donley tapped as Cleveland Clinic London CEO

Effective immediately, Dr. Brian Donley, an orthopedic surgeon, will take the reins as CEO of Cleveland Clinic London. The six-story, 200-bed hospital is scheduled to open in 2020.

Less than six months after Cleveland Clinic appointed a successor for CEO Toby Cosgrove, the organization has picked a leader for its London location.

Effective immediately, Dr. Brian Donley will take the reins as CEO of Cleveland Clinic London.

He currently serves as Cleveland Clinic’s chief of staff and chief of clinical operations. He’ll continue to hold those positions until a successor is named.

An orthopedic surgeon, Donley earned his medical degree from the University of Michigan Medical School. He joined Cleveland Clinic in 1986 and has held various roles through the years, including vice president of regional hospitals. Donley is also a professor of surgery at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine.

In a statement, he said:

It has been a great privilege to lead Cleveland Clinic’s remarkable medical staff and clinical operations team for the past three years. I’m confident in our collective ability to introduce our unique model of care into the London healthcare landscape. Our mission, vision and values translate well to all areas of the globe.

As CEO, Donley will assist with recruitment and oversee strategy and operations of the six-story hospital, which is scheduled to open in 2020. It will house 200 inpatient beds, eight operating rooms, a neurological suite and an imaging suite, among other features.

Last month, Westminster City Council gave Cleveland Clinic planning permission for the conversion of the space into a healthcare building.

The opening of the building seems to be another step in Cleveland Clinic’s strategy to gain a worldwide footprint. It’s the health system’s first facility in London. The organization already has hospitals in Ohio; Florida; Las Vegas; Toronto, Canada; and Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.

In addition to this latest announcement, Cleveland Clinic has seen a busy past few months, which were full of both good and bad news.

On January 1, Dr. Tomislav “Tom” Mihaljevic took over as CEO. He was formerly the CEO of Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi.

Last fall, Gary Fingerhut, the former executive director of Cleveland Clinic Innovations, pleaded guilty to charges that he helped defraud the institution of more than $2.7 million. Shortly thereafter, a grand jury indicted the spinoff’s former CTO, Wisam Rizk, on fraud charges.
