Intermountain Healthcare and startup MDClone launch data-focused collaboration

The key part of the collaboration involves loading Intermountain's data into MDClone's Sandbox within the walls of Intermountain, then evaluating the data to understand crucial points in a patient's care journey.

Intermountain Healthcare, a system based in Salt Lake City, has joined forces with Israeli startup MDClone to rethink how to turn data into actionable insights.

The key part of the collaboration involves loading Intermountain’s data into MDClone’s Sandbox within the walls of Intermountain. The next step is to evaluate the patient medical data to understand the critical decision points in a patient’s care journey. The Sandbox protects patient privacy and doesn’t risk the exposure of patients’ identities.

The overall goal is to enable Intermountain caregivers to better understand and manage patients.

“Gathering good patient data is essential to our mission, but the key is unlocking it to pull out the most meaningful information and applying it in ways that bring value to the caregiver, the health system and most importantly, the patient,” Mike Phillips, managing director of Intermountain Ventures, said in a statement.

The two entities plan to begin their work by looking at kidney disease and end-stage renal disease. Intermountain can use MDClone’s ability to analyze medical records to pinpoint groups of patients with all stages of kidney disease. Ultimately, the aim is to treat and prevent individuals’ progression to end-stage renal disease.

Going forward, the organizations also plan to examine other clinical areas like heart failure and stroke care.

“With the expertise from Intermountain’s teams, we’ll unlock its vast data and turn that data into insights and ultimately into higher-quality and lower-cost patient care in Utah and beyond,” said MDClone CEO Ziv Ofek in a statement.

MDClone was founded in 2016 and is based in Israel. It is led by the founding team of dbMotion, an Israeli healthcare company that Allscripts acquired in 2013.
