Care navigation platform Medumo unites with Boston Children’s Hospital to improve the patient experience

As part of the collaboration, Medumo obtains an exclusive license of DisCo, an application created by Boston Children’s that helps patients after they’ve been discharged.

Boston Children’s Hospital and Medumo, a startup with a patient navigation platform, have joined forces to offer a pediatric care messaging service.

Medumo’s platform lets patients get appropriately scheduled for appointments. It also allows individuals to complete pre-appointment tasks and follow instructions once they leave the hospital. Plus, its technology can predict which people are at higher risk of canceling or not showing up, then alert clinicians so they can intervene. Patients don’t have to download an app to use Medumo, and they can choose to communicate via email, SMS or voice.

As part of the new collaboration, Medumo obtains an exclusive license of DisCo, an application created by Boston Children’s. DisCo enables patients and their families to better communicate with their specialists. After a patient is discharged, DisCo sends a message with questions to determine whether they need follow-up assistance from Boston Children’s. The ultimate aim is to prevent avoidable readmissions.

The partnership will marry the pre-visit functionality of Medumo’s CareTour platform with DisCo’s post-discharge offering. DisCo can work in conjunction with Medumo’s framework.

The plan is to deploy the combined solutions across three Boston Children’s departments: gastroenterology, bariatric surgery and the adolescent medicine long-acting reversible contraception program.

Through Medumo’s tool, other pediatric hospitals will now be able to use post-discharge features developed at Boston Children’s.

“We are excited to incorporate Boston Children’s technology and expertise into Medumo’s core platform and offer specialized pediatric CareTours to hospitals and clinics across the country,” Medumo co-founder and CEO Adeel Yang said in a statement.

Boston-based Medumo, which works with more than 25 hospitals, was a finalist for the Pitch Perfect contest at the MedCity ENGAGE conference last fall. In 2017, the startup won the second annual Connected Patient Challenge, a competition developed and launched by Boston Scientific. It was also among the 31 startups selected to participate in the inaugural PULSE@MassChallenge program (which is now known as MassChallenge HealthTech).
