Longtime Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association CEO stepping down next year

Serota joined the Association in 1996 and was promoted to the position of president and CEO in 2000

Scott Serota, the president and CEO of the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association will retire at the end of 2020, the organization announced Wednesday.

Blue Cross Blue Shield Association is the organizing federation of the 36 seperate Blue plans across the country, which together provide insurance to more than 107 million people.

BCBCSA said its board of directors has initiated its process to find Serota’s successor and until which point he will continue in his current role in working towards the organization’s business and policy priorities.

Serota joined the Association in 1996 and was promoted to the position of president and CEO in 2000. Prior to joining BCBSA, Serota was the president and CEO of Rush Prudential Health Plans, based in Chicago.

Throughout his tenure as the head of BCBSA, Serota was one of the top paid association heads earning more than $5.7 million in total compensation in 2013.

In addition to his work in business, Serota has also served on President George W. Bush’s Policy Committee of the White House Conference on Aging.
