Specialty pharmacy launches near Boston Children’s Hospital aiming to help overcome barriers to care

Boston Children’s Hospital and Shields Health Solutions partnered to launch Boston Children’s Pharmacy, a specialty pharmacy, right across from the hospital to help young patients and families get better access to specialized pharmacy services including help with prior authorizations, and specialized medications.

Boston Children’s Hospital has partnered with Shields Health Solutions, a specialty pharmacy integrator and care provider, to open a children’s pharmacy across from the hospital. Starting in March, pediatric patients suffering from complex chronic conditions and their families can use the pharmacy to get easier access to the specialized pharmacy services they need for their care plans that a typical pharmacy may not have on hand.

Further, Boston Children’s Pharmacy hopes to offer expanded treatment options and better medication management, all at a lower cost. Patients’ guardians can not only walk across the street from the top ranked children’s hospital in the United States to fill their child’s prescriptions, but they also have access to specialty pharmacy liaisons.

The liaisons will work on-site in select ambulatory programs at Boston Children’s Hospital to make the process of obtaining prior authorization from health insurance a seamless process for families, since paying for treatment can be one of the biggest barriers to care. The liaisons will also help families with securing financial assistance if needed.

“The positive outcomes for our children and families are our top priority,” said Kevin Churchwell, president and CEO of Boston Children’s Hospital, in the news release. “With the specialized care that Shields Health Solutions will provide, we know that we will be able to provide more families with the outcomes they desire when they are in our care.”

The pharmacy aims to make onsite treatment options more readily available and to do so while offering an array of recently approved drugs as well as treatments that are newly available so patients can have top of the line care.

Stoughton, Massachusetts-based Shields partners with 70 healthcare systems throughout the United States in a variety of areas: speeding up medication delivery (frequently in two days or less) and lowering co-pays. Further, Shields boasts an average of 90% or greater improved medication adherence.

“Collaborating with Boston Children’s Pharmacy and providing our specialty pharmacy services to the children and families who need it most is truly an honor,” said Lee Cooper, CEO of Shields Health Solutions, in a news release. “We are excited to help patients at Boston Children’s achieve their best outcomes so they can live their best lives.”
