A majority of benefit consultants recommend that self-insured employers look to independent healthcare navigation solutions, according to a new survey conducted by MedCity News and sponsored by Quantum Health. Self-insured employers are also adopting GLP-1 drug coverage conditioned upon measurable outcomes, according to the third annual Benefits Sentiment Index.
The 2025 Index, based on a survey of more than 120 benefit consultants, found that consultants often guide self-insured employers to independent healthcare navigation companies, citing the need for a better member experience, stronger clinical integration and greater transparency in cost savings.
The Index also highlighted the growing influence of AI. Seventy-two percent of consultants said they counsel clients on the impact of AI in benefits programs. Nearly one-third (31%) said they now advise on AI frequently or most of the time, compared with 20% in 2024.
As GLP-1 drug coverage has become a more pervasive benefit option, adoption is being conditioned upon results that can be validated. Of the 87% of the consultants who said they advise employers on GLP-1 drug coverage, a little more than half, 54%, said they help clients tie GLP-1 drugs to quantifiable value and cost outcomes.
One consultant volunteered: “We are steering clients toward predictive modeling to identify who will benefit and avoid waste.”
