Canary Health, a digital health business that seeks to help people deemed to be on their way to developing chronic conditions change course through a combination of virtual health coaches and targeted content, has inked a deal with Medtronic as the medical device company makes a push into pre-diabetes.
It’s an interesting partner because until now Canary Health has tended to work with health plans, providers and employers.
Under the terms of the deal, spelled out in a company statement, Medtronic will be a reseller for Canary Health’s platform programs. Medtronic will also work with Canary Health to develop programs that enlist Medtronic’s devices, services and infrastructure and Canary Health’s behavior change programs, design, and user engagement insights.

Medtronic also plans to offer Canary Health’s other chronic disease self-management programs associated with diabetes, including arthritis, depression, and heart disease, the statement said.
Medtronic’s deal with Canary Health is one of several to come out in the week of the American Diabetes Association’s 76th Scientific Sessions. Glooko made its platform compatible with Medtronic insulin pumps and sensors. One product of that integration is that Medtronic customers have more options for how they display and use their diabetes data, a statement from Medtronic said.
Medtronic also added access to diet and nutrition app developer Nutrino’s technology for the medical device company’s MiniMed Connect users. The new app continuous glucose meter data with Nutrino’s nutritional insights and seeks to give users a “FoodPrint” based on their daily diet, activity, sleep and other factors affecting glucose levels.
Although IBM isn’t a new partner, Medtronic and IBM Watson Health finally came up with a name for their jointly developed app — SugarWise. The app is intended to help guide users’ diabetes management.
