Summa Physicians hires first chief medical officer

Summa Physicians Inc. has named a longtime leader from the region's medical school to serve in the newly created position of chief medical officer. Dr. Jay Williamson, 63, will assume the position in Summa Health System's physician practice Dec. 1. He previously served as the interim dean of the College of Medicine at the Northeastern Ohio Universities Colleges of Medicine and Pharmacy (NEOUCOM) in Rootstown, Ohio.

Akron General Health System wins 5 Cleveland-area cardiologists

Five Cleveland-area cardiologists from North Ohio Heart Center recently agreed to join Akron General Partners Physician Group. The heart doctors now practice primarily in southwest Cuyahoga County and Medina and Lorain counties. On Nov. 22, Drs. Ismail Ahmed, Donald Cho, Atul Hulyalkar, Fernando Mundoz and Qarab Syed will be under a lease agreement to provide general and diagnostic cardiac services for Akron General.

The massive overhaul of the nation's healthcare system that's beginning to roll out this month is ''a good start.'' But expect to see more efforts among doctors and hospitals to coordinate your care as a result of the new provisions, Richard J. Umbdenstock, president and chief executive of the American Hospital Association, said during a talk at the Akron Roundtable on Thursday.

PNC’s Karen Bozzelli to lead Akron General Health foundation

The Akron General Development Foundation was founded in 1974 to provide support for the Akron General Medical Center and its related non-profit businesses. The foundation had net assets of about $14.3 million in 2008, the most recent year for which non-profit federal tax filings are available. ''My goal to is grow the foundation, the assets of the foundation, utilizing the relationships that I've established over many years in this community and gain the support of the community again.'' she said. ''That only makes the hospital better.''

Summa Health readies to open Medina County outpatient facility

Akron, Ohio-based Summa Health System is getting ready to open its first major outpatient facility in the region's fastest growing county.
