Prof. Dr. Gheorghe Ioan Mihalas is professor of artificial intelligence in medicine at Vasile Goldiș Western University of Arad, Romania. He holds MS degrees in biophysics and in informatics, a PhD in biophysics, and was a Fulbright scholar at the Medical College of Virginia. With over five decades of academic experience, he served as professor of medical informatics at Victor Babeș University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Timișoara (1994–2011). He is chair of the Commission for Medical Informatics, AI, and Data Protection at the Romanian Academy of Medical Sciences, a founding member of the International Academy of Health Sciences Informatics (IAHSI), and a former President of the European Federation for Medical Informatics (EFMI).
If we choose the quick fix, let us be honest about the consequences: when an unexamined algorithm leads to a fatal diagnostic error, the blame will not lie with the black box. It will lie with us, because we were too reckless to teach the fundamentals when we still had the chance.
