Akron General team predicts bright future

This time last year, Akron General's operating loss was about $7 million, Rindler said. Today, the medical center's operating revenue is exceeding expenses by $2.1 million. ''The better you do, the more resources you have, the more you can solicit ideas from physicians,'' Interim Chief Executive Michael Rindler said. ''It now is really feeding on itself — the cultural changes and the financial improvement.''

BioInnovation Institute in Akron takes name of heart surgeon, retiring Knight Foundation chairman

On its first anniversary, the BioInnovation Institute in Akron added "Austen" to its name, recognizing internationally renown heart surgeon and retiring Knight Foundation Chairman Dr. W. Gerald Austen and his wife Patricia R. Austen. In its first year, the bioinnovation institute has hired an experienced CEO, launched five centers of excellence, attracted nationally recognized board members, and academic and clinical researchers.

Akron General CEO Alan Bleyer is leaving

The health system is fighting off economic challenges and mounting competition for its patients. Cleveland Clinic last month acquired Medina General Hospital -- the latest in a series of attempts by both the Clinic and University Hospitals Health System to push further south from its base in the immediate Cleveland suburbs. Bleyer was CEO since 2002 and a new leader should be picked in a year's time.

3 Northeast Ohio hospitals announce more than 200 layoffs

Akron General Medical Center will lay off 145, St. Vincent Charity Hospital is cutting 50 jobs and St. John West Shore shed 10. In addition, the Health Alliance of Greater Cincinnati said it would layoff about 50 employees at two of its hospitals. "We are facing unprecedented challenges in our economy," said one hospital spokeswoman.

Akron General Health System asks for labor concessions to preserve jobs

Akron General Health System has asked its nurses and support staff to consider taking less pay in order to minimize likely job cuts in the future. Officials from the Akron health system met with leaders of the Professional Staff Nurses Association and United Steelworkers of America Local 1014-L on Monday ''to propose reopening the contracts to discuss a reduction in wages, with the goal of preserving as many jobs as possible,'' Akron General spokesman Jim Gosky said in a written statement Thursday.
