More layoffs in Northeast Ohio health care (with hints of more to come)

Community Health Partners announced cuts in jobs and workers hours, while union officials at Youngstown’s Forum Health said they expect layoffs too.

LORAIN, Ohio — Community Health Partners announced cuts in jobs and workers’ hours, while union officials at Youngstown’s Forum Health expect layoffs too.,

Community Health Partners laid off 35 of its 2,100-member workforce and cut the hours of 51 others, according to the Morning Journal. The health system — based west of Cleveland in Lorain — runs two hospitals with about 350 total beds.

The culprit for the layoffs was a decrease in admissions and surgeries. Officials said they “tried to have minimal impact on staff members who work directly with patient care,” but added that health-care staff members will now have the same workload as they did before admissions dropped.

Community Health Partners expected to save $2.1 million from the cuts this year, according to the Journal.

More ominous was news related to Youngstown-based Forum Health, where union officials said the health system would cut 277 jobs from its 4,000-member workforce, according to the Tribune Chronicle. The hospital’s chief executive denied the plans.

Union officials said the information came during negotiations in which Forum wants $10 million in concessions from the 1,200 union workers. The health-system is emerging from Chapter 11 bankruptcy and considering, among other things, closing the financially shaky Northside Medical Center if it doesn’t start making money.

The Ohio Hospital Association in early April said three dozen hospitals across the state had layoff plans this year, though most of those cuts would occur at rural hospitals. Along with Community Health Partners, Cleveland’s MetroHealth Medical Center also announced cuts recently.
