Fifty teams from Ohio’s medical industry — with more possibly on the way — will bring their talents to Gateway Plaza for this year’s MedCity News Medical Cornhole Tournament at 4 p.m. Thursday.
The event is a who’s who of medical prowess and the best athletic talent you can hope to muster from a healthcare industry: insurance companies like Medical Mutual and Kaiser Permanente; hospitals including University Hospitals Case Medical Center and EMH Regional Healthcare; businesses like Cleveland Medical Devices, OrthoHelix Surgical Designs and NDI Medical; medical schools such as Case Western Reserve University and Northeast Ohio Medical University; as well as groups like BioEnterprise, the Austen BioInnovation Institute in Akron and the Ohio Hospital Association.
And, of course, also attending are the returning champions: Cleveland Clinic Innovations.

The winning team will walk away with its own cornhole set, a $100 gift certificate to Brennan’s Catering and four Club Seats to a Lake Erie Monsters game. Winners also will get to see fellow athletes in action, as well as a giant tournament bracket outlining their path to victory and bragging rights as the best cornhole players in healthcare.
This is both a cornhole tournament and a networking event. So anyone is welcome to come by, cheer on a team, enjoy the spectacle and play a little cornhole of your own. The event is free to attend. The only cost is for onlookers who want some of the hot dogs, hamburgers and other picnic food available. It costs $15 to eat (teams from the medical industry that want to play and eat must pay $25).
And for those who can’t make it but want to watch, visit MedCityNews.com on Thursday where we’ll have a live video feed from the event.
Below are directions, rules of cornhole and other details. If you have questions, contact MedCity News via e-mail or call (216) 453-2662 Ext. 105.

For the teams
The event starts at 4 p.m., but cornhole games don’t start until 5 p.m. Please come in advance of the 5 p.m. start time to sign in and get your free cornhole t-shirts, and wristbands that give you access to the food and soft drinks (alcohol available at a cash bar; proceeds donated to charity). There are 10 cornhole sets, and games will run continuously.
For the cheering sections
Cheering (and heckling) are encouraged. There will be some cornhole boards for onlookers to play, and everyone has a chance to take part in drawings that include gift certificates from local restaurants and gifts from organizations including the Akron Aeros, American Greetings, Cleveland Browns, Cleveland Plus, and Kaiser Permanente.

Gateway Plaza is between Progressive Field and Quicken Loans Arena. Street parking, lots and parking garages abound. Traffic will be manageable (the Indians are on the road).
Who do we thank for all this?
Downtown Cleveland Alliance, Cleveland Medical Mart and Convention Center, Fleishman Hillard, Perspectus Architecture, thunder::tech and Studiothink have graciously sponsored the event. They’re also playing in the tournament.
Weather
Forecast says sunny with virtually no chance of rain, high of 84.
Basic cornhole rules
This is a fun event, and everyone will be forgiving about the rules. But the tournament will be run under the official setup and rules of cornhole. Here are the rules to keep in mind.
- Cornhole sets are 27 feet apart. Teammates throw four bags from opposite sides of one another alongside the cornhole platforms. An “inning” consists of both teams throwing a eight bags.
- A team wins when it is the first to reach or exceed 21 points.
- A bag in the hole is worth three points. A bag on top of the platform (a bag “in the count”) is worth one point. Keep this in mind: Opponents throwing in the same half-inning will cancel one another’s bags. For example, if opponents match one another by each putting a bag in the hole, those bags cancel one another out. Only uncanceled bags count for points.
- Fun: You are not required to have fun. But it will be hard not to.
