UnitedHealthcare has put all the numbers in one place. The health insurance company has made it easier for many customers to manage all the relevant healthcare financial data online. The new service is myClaimsManager.

I am not a UnitedHealth customer, so I can’t check it out personally, but the interface seems to collect all the relevant data points:

  • A listing for each claim
  • A breakdown of who is paying what
  • A listing of health reimbursement accounts, health savings accounts and flexible spending accounts
  • An accounting of in-network and out-of-network deductibles
  • An accounting of out-of-pocket spending

The payment tool also offers the ability to track medical expenses for tax reporting, which will be a crucial ability for anyone using the insurance marketplaces. The company says the service is available to more than 21 million UnitedHealthcare plan participants nationwide. The payer worked with InstaMed to create an online payment part of the tool.

As far as I can tell, many insurers allow customers to pay premiums online or individual bills online. I couldn’t find a comprehensive financial service from any of the other major payers.

This is the way it should work, and I am glad to see UnitedHealth raising the bar for the industry. Convenience and good data management will be enough to keep customers and get new ones. I don’t know if UPS employees have an interface this comprehensive, but the search for new insurance wouldn’t be quite as painful for working spouses if they could switch to a United plan that included this tool.

United is on a roll this year with a big presence at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas in January and then winning recognition for its smartly designed patient app Health4Me earlier this year from MediaPost. The online financial management tool is just the right product to follow the cost estimator tool and provider locator app that the company launched earlier this year.
