This week will see two firsts in health IT within the federal government, Dr. Jon White, deputy national coordinator in the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology, said at MedCity ENGAGE.
On Wednesday, ONC will host its inaugural grand rounds in medical informatics. The presenter will be Dr. Rollin J. “Terry” Fairbanks, director of the Washington-based National Center for Human Factors in Healthcare at MedStar Health, which serves the Washington and Baltimore metro areas.
Friday, White and Leslie Kelly Hall will co-chair the first meeting of the Health IT Policy Committee‘s newly announced Precision Medicine Task Force. Hall is senior vice president of policy for Healthwise, an organization that provides online patient education tools and content.

Munck Wilson Mandala Partner Greg Howison shared his perspective on some of the legal ramifications around AI, IP, connected devices and the data they generate, in response to emailed questions.
During his talk at ENGAGE, White stressed the significance of health IT in the Obama administration’s Precision Medicine Initiative, as well as the importance of precision medicine to President Obama himself. “When the president gets up in the morning, he thinks first about Mrs. Obama, then he thinks about national security, then he thinks about precision medicine,” White said.
