Omada Health, known for digitizing the Type 2 diabetes prevention program, is adding new programs that reflect an expansion into managing chronic conditions such as hypertension and Type 2 diabetes.

In a phone interview, Adam Brickman, Omada Health Senior Director for Communication and Public Policy, denied that this move comes in response to not enough demand for the company’s DPP and said the new set of programs is designed to respond to demand from health plans and self-insured employers.

This is a North star we have had all along,” he said. “The marketplace is looking for more holistic solutions. Right now we’re seeing a lot of health plans or employers being asked to choose between point solutions and platforms where [a third party] is making the choice of who should enroll.”

Only last month Brickman observed in an interview when the company secured full CDC recognition for its virtual DPP that CMS has been slow to enroll the number of suppliers necessary to meet the demand of eligible Medicare beneficiaries. Still, on Wednesday he emphasized that Omada is still seeing “a tremendous amount” of demand for its DPP.

With the new programs that Omada is rolling out, medication adherence and integrating remote monitoring for glucose and blood pressure play a key role. The company’s program expansion means its chronic disease management programs can be customized to participants based on their clinical profile, even if they have multiple chronic conditions such as hypertension and diabetes. It can also take into consideration the participant’s activity and data from connected glucometers and blood pressure cuffs. Other participant criteria that will be factored into their program are personal barriers to success users have identified. Although Omada will initially let users integrate any brand of these connected devices they choose, Brickman said the company may eventually decide on a preferred brand.

The company will continue to contract as a digital healthcare provider, filing medical claims with billing tied to participation and outcomes, according to the news release.

The decision by Omada to expand their program calls to mind Livongo, which had focused on diabetes management alongside other chronic conditions before adding a diabetes prevention program earlier this year through its acquisition of Retrofit, which also has a weight management program. Livongo said it would integrate those programs into its platform.  In January this year, Livongo also added a hypertension management program.
