Henry Ford Health System, GM sign contract to bring new healthcare option to automaker’s employees

Through GM's ConnectedCare plan, nearly 24,000 General Motors salaried employees and their families in southeastern Michigan will be able to access Henry Ford providers. Employees can select the plan during the company's open enrollment this fall, and service will officially start at the beginning of 2019.

Henry Ford Health System has inked a direct-to-employer contract with General Motors. As part of the agreement, the Detroit, Michigan-based system will deliver healthcare management and wellness services to GM employees and their families in southeastern Michigan.

The offering is known as GM’s ConnectedCare plan option. Employees can select the plan during the company’s open enrollment this fall, and service will officially start at the beginning of 2019.

The plan will give almost 24,000 GM salaried employees and their beneficiaries access to over 3,000 providers in seven counties offering primary care, specialty care, behavioral health, emergency care and more.

In addition to care services, ConnectedCare members will have access to Henry Ford MyChart, which lets them message their physician and pay bills via their smartphone. Henry Ford will also help employees choose the best care options.

“We are honored that General Motors chose Henry Ford for its first direct contract in southeast Michigan,” Henry Ford Health System president and CEO Wright Lassiter said in a statement. “Given our experience in delivering value-based care, and our extensive physician network, we are uniquely poised to create a truly innovative solution for GM, their employees and families.”

The ultimate goal of the multi-year contract is to decrease costs and improve the health of ConnectedCare members. According to The Detroit News, annual premiums for the new plan will be $300 to $900 less than GM’s current lowest cost option.

General Motors isn’t the only company teaming up with a health system in an effort to boost employee health and wellness.

A few years ago, Boeing contracted with MemorialCare for a health plan option for its employees in Southern California.

Walmart took a slightly different approach. It joined forces with Atlanta, Georgia-based Emory Healthcare to create an accountable care organization. It allows Walmart employees at 55 Walmart, Sam’s Club and Walmart Distribution Center locations in metro-Atlanta to choose the Emory Accountable Care Plan as their primary health plan.
